Recently, the White House hosted a significant meeting where European leaders convened to discuss ending the war between Russia and Ukraine. I was impressed that Alexander Stubb, the President of my birth country, Finland, was invited to the table. He joined the other European leaders under the leadership of President Trump. Finland is a small country and shares the longest border with Russia. And has experienced Russian aggression during WWII.
Everyone invited
The Bible often refers to sitting at the table as a symbol of God’s grace for those who believe in the Lord Jesus Christ. Each person invited to the table is important to God because of His plan of salvation. God sacrificed of His only Son, Jesus Christ, who died on the cross for our sins. Everyone is invited, but not all accept. Who is called to sit at the table? Only those who receive His love and forgiveness. They are invited to sit at His table for fellowship, peace, love, and reconciliation.
Every person invited to sit at the table has the same opportunity as everyone else to listen, learn, contribute, and influence others. When one is invited to the table, it represents an opportunity to be heard. At the Last Supper table the disciples engaged in disputes and questioned Jesus about who is the greatest. Jesus used this opportunity to teach them about servanthood.
Jesus invites us to a lifelong relationship with God and offers peace despite worldly conflict. He longs to hear from us whatever is on our hearts or present our requests in prayer.
Speaking
I watched the live presentation in which President Trump led the group and invited each person to speak in turn. Although the variety of viewpoints and ideas differed slightly, the overall mood centered on peace and a desire to end the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
Whether the results of these peace talks come to fruition any time soon, as Christians, we can pray that God’s will be done.
You can read Luke 22 to find the full story of events about Jesus talking with his disciples at before and after the Last Supper.
